What: Level 1 Avalanche Fundamentals course for Snowmobilers

When: Evening lectures January 28 and 29, 6-9:30 p.m. All day field session on Saturday, January 31.

Where: Summit Motorsports, Bozeman

Cost: $100 donation to the Friends of the Avalanche Center.

  1. Everyone must have their own sled and rescue gear (shovel, probe and beacon). There will be a beacon/rescue gear TEST the first night of class.
  2. Everyone must be a strong rider and negotiate most backcountry terrain and is confident highmarking on steep, open slopes and weaving through tight trees and other technical obstacles.

This course is limited to 16 riders! Registration closes January 17th.

Details: The Friends of the Avalanche Center and the GNFAC are putting this course on with assistance from Summit Motor Sports. The evening lectures are followed by an all day field session. This is the first Level 1 for snowmobilers offered in Montana and one of the very few ever offered in the US.  The course content comes from the American Avalanche Association guidelines. Terrain, Weather, Snowpack, Decision-Making and Rescue will all be covered.

Riders need to show up the first day of class with the pack they ride in with all their rescue gear. Everyone will be tested on using a beacon and assembling their gear quickly.  Practice beforehand.

A detailed itinerary and pre-course materials will be emailed to all students in late December.
